Writing your college essay is often the most challenging — and most personal — part of the application process. Many students struggle not because they don’t have stories to tell, but because they don’t know how to find them or shape them into a compelling narrative.
This interactive workshop is designed specifically for rising seniors who want to start their personal statement with clarity, structure, and strong ideas.
During this guided session, we will work through the “Essay in the Box” framework created by Ethan Sawyer (The College Essay Guy) — one of the most widely respected essay-development exercises used by counselors and writing coaches across the country.
Throughout the workshop you will:
-
Identify meaningful life experiences that can become strong essay topics
-
Explore values, influences, and defining moments that shape your story
-
Participate in guided brainstorming exercises
-
Begin organizing ideas into potential essay directions
This is a hands-on workshop, not a lecture. We will be moving through multiple exercises together, so please come prepared to think, write, and engage actively. Students will have opportunities to share ideas and reflections with the group, though sharing is always optional. Listening to others’ stories often helps students uncover insights about their own experiences.
